Calamine Lotion For Dark Spots – Benefits, Uses, and Risks

(Last Updated On: May 4, 2021)

Calamine lotion for dark spots, Calamine lotion contains Kaolin, which is used in dark spot removal creams. Calamine is a substance with an itch-soothing action and has multiple uses: it helps soothe skin irritations, itchiness, insect bites or jellyfish stings, and minor burns. Calamine adheres to the skin and protects it by retaining moisture.

How do you use calamine?

Calamine is an astringent substance made from carbonate or zinc oxide. If you are pregnant before using it, you should consult your doctor. If you are breastfeeding, you can use it.

Do not put it on open wounds or near the eyes or nose. Before use, it is essential to apply a small amount to an area of skin to find out if you are allergic (this is not very common).

If your skin reacts with redness or inflammation, you may be allergic to this substance. It is unlikely since calamine is used in small concentrations, even in babies from three months.

If, after your application, you notice redness, hives, shortness of breath, or swelling of the lips, face, or tongue, you may be suffering from anaphylactic shock. Call 911 immediately communicating the incidence, if you are alone, lie down with your legs elevated, unless there is vomiting or respiratory distress,

The way of use is always described in the product, it can be purchased in pharmacies as it is an over-the-counter preparation, and also in online stores.

  1. Before applying, wash the skin with soap and water—dry well.
  2. Shake the lotion before use.
  3. Apply directly to the skin and rub gently; you can also use sterile gauze to help spread over the skin.
  4. After application, wash your hands.
  5. Repeat the same process two or three times a day.
  6. Calamine lotion, while drying, can leave a thin layer to stain clothing. Try to leave the skin in the air for a while until it dries.
  7. Keep the lotion at room temperature, in a dry place, and as fresh as possible, but it doesn’t have to be in the fridge.

Calamine lotion, a success for irritated skin

Calamine lotions are mostly composed of this ingredient but also contain water, glycerin or other components.

One of the properties of calamine is to soothe and calm the skin, reducing redness, inflammation, and wounds that we may have.

Although it has also been proven to be very beneficial in fighting acne, it can be used to treat sunburns, bites, and other skin conditions. Calamine lotion is applied like any other cream, topically, and only on the area that is irritated so that it acts on this part.

Contraindications Calamine

Homemade calamine

As you well know, I am looking for and trying many recipes to make powders and lotions to relieve itching caused by atopic dermatitis that my oldest daughter has.

A little while ago, I shared with you the recipe for making powders to relieve itching. In today’s article, I want you to discover how to make homemade calamine lotion.

La Calamine has a lot of beneficial applications, is used to reduce the itch of chickenpox in mosquito bites, eczema, rashes, minor burns (here I like to use aloe or aloe vera), even for acne.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup zinc oxide
  • 4 tablespoons of pink clay (red clay and white clay or Kaolin).
  • 4 tablespoon of baking soda.
  • 1/4 cup of filtered water.
  • 1/2 teaspoon of liquid glycerin, is optional although it is better to include it in the recipe.
  • 3 or 4 drops of lavender essential oil.

Instead of using filtered or mineral water, we can use some hydrolase such as rose water, lavender water, or chamomile water, which will also add its medicinal properties to the preparation.

Vegetable glycerin can also be put a week before macerating, e.g., in dried rose petals to enrich it.

We can use different essential oils. Lavender serves as an antiseptic, soothing, and regenerating the skin. The one with roses will relax the itch and take care of the skin. The tea tree serves as an antiseptic and to refresh the area.

We can also use essential oils such as mint or camphor, to refresh the area, although I do not recommend them if you are going to use homemade calamine in children or people with sensitive skin.

As white clay, you can also use clay for internal use, it would be the best, but it is more expensive.

Elaboration

  1. In a glass bowl, we add the clays, the zinc oxide, and the bicarbonate first. We mix well.
  2. Note, if necessary, sift the clays to make a more excellent powder.
  3. We add the filtered water, better if it is lavender water.
  4. In glycerin, add the drops of essential oil and mix. Pour into the bowl and stir well.
  5. Store in a glass jar or similar with closure.

Important; when carrying clay, you should not touch the metal; we should not use metal lids or metal spoons.

If we mix it with water or a hydrolase, this preparation will last us a few weeks in the fridge. If you want or think that we are not going to use it very often, we can prepare the dry part on one side and add the liquids when they are needed.

Why these components?

Zinc oxide: it is used in the usual way in cosmetics, I use it a lot in diaper creams such as water-based paste. It creates a protective layer, thus helping the skin to recover.

Bentonite clay and white clay, Kaolin: Clays have many properties for the care of our skin, it is soothing, anti-inflammatory, it is remineralizing, it helps to have proper healing, it cleanses, and it is used as an antiseptic.

Baking soda: It is very useful in eliminating itching.

Vegetable glycerin: it is widely used in all types of cosmetics. It helps soften skin and keep it hydrated.
