Spiritual meaning of smelling sulfur. The first historical reference to sulfur tells of the rain of destruction from the sky in the form of fire and sulfur over the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. (Ge 19:24; Luke 17:29) Based on geological testimony, some believe that this catastrophic execution by Jehovah was possibly caused by a volcanic eruption in the southern region of the Dead Sea, which would explain the abundance of sulfur in that area today.

It is believed that ancient Jerusalem had a high-temperature burn, or crematorium, which was achieved by adding sulfur to the fires that always burned in the Hinton Valley (Gehenna) outside the walls.

Since the burning judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah in 1919 B.C., Scripture has often referred to the highly flammable nature of sulfur. (Isa 30:33; 34:9; Rev 9:17, 18) It is a symbol of total desolation. (Deut 29:22, 23; Job 18:15) When the Bible describes utter destruction, the expression “fire and brimstone” usually appears. (Ps 11:6; Ezekiel 38:22; Rev 14:9-11) We are told that the Devil will be thrown “into the lake of fire that burns with brimstone,” meaning “the second death” or complete annihilation. (Rev 19:20; 20:10; 21:8.)

The smells of mold, rotten eggs or sulfur, and spoiled food are often associated with unhappy, unfriendly spirits or even demons. These odors are often associated with entities other than loved ones. Many demonologists claim that the smell of sulfur is clear evidence of the presence of demons.
