Ammonium lactate lotion for dark spots.

The lactic acid component of Ammonium lactate may exfoliate (remove) the darker skin cells and reduce the darkness of age spots. Ammonium lactate (cream) It is a combination of lactic acid and ammonium hydroxide, it is a humectant. It’s used to treat dry, scaly, itchy skin. It may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Ingredients

The ammonium lactate contains 12% lactic acid neutralized with ammonium hydroxide. This produces a slightly acidic lotion of ammonium lactate, an ammonium salt of alpha-hydroxy acid known as lactic acid, or 2-hydroxypropanoic acid. Lactic acid has the chemical formula COOHCHOHCH3.

In addition, the commonly prescribed 12% ammonium lactate formulation also contains mineral oil, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, propylene glycol, polyenglycol 40 stearate, glycerin, magnesium aluminum silicate, lauryl ether 4, cetyl alcohol, methylparaben and propylparaben, methylcellulose, perfume, and water.

Ammonium lactate lotion uses

This medicine is used to treat dry skin with scaling (e.g., xerosis, ichthyosis Vulgaris) and to relieve itching caused by these conditions. It works by moisturizing the skin.

Ammonium lactate works by moisturizing the skin. The outermost layer of the skin’s epidermis is known as the stratum corneum. The amount of water contained in this layer determines whether the skin is sufficiently hydrated. When the stratum corneum contains 10% or more water, the skin is hydrated, soft, and supple; below 10%, the skin is dry, cracked, and can become flaky and irritated, says the National Institutes of Health.

Ammonium lactate provides relief for dry, irritated skin by increasing the moisture content of the skin’s stratum corneum layer. Lactic acid and the ammonium salt of lactic acid, function as hygroscopic compounds, absorbing and distributing relatively large volumes of water .

In addition to providing symptomatic relief from dry skin, the label instructions for ammonium lactate indicate that lactic acid and ammonium lactate reduce excessive epidermal keratinization, which is the thick skin found in patients with conditions such as ichthyiosis, a genetic disease usually characterized by dry, thick, scaly, or flaky skin.

On the other hand, a 1989 study conducted at the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute showed that ammonium lactate could also treat large inflammatory cysts and abscesses.
